Study 3: Huggy Pajama: Remote Parent-Child Hugging Communication System

Huggy Pajama is a novel wearable system that promotes physical interaction in remote communication between parents and children by enabling each to hug one another through a novel hugging interface device and a wearable hug reproducing jacket connected through the Internet.

We are inviting children ages 7-10 years old, with their parents to use the Huggy Pajama system, and help us in our research by answering some questions, and giving their feedback on the system.

Study 2: Confucius Chat User Study

Introduction

In Mixed Reality Lab (www.mixedrealitylab.org), Interactive Digital Media Institute, National University of Singapore, we are researching on new type of entertainment media that would mediate intergenerational communication, in particular between elderly and young. Our goal is to design digital media that would enhance family bonding and improve elderly health and well-being.

Confucius Chat models Confucius teaching and knowledge into a virtual Confucius in social network chat, which allows the users to have meaningful instant messaging chat with him, and at the same time explore his teachings and values.

Participants Profile

We need two groups of participants. If you belong to any groups, you are eligible to sign up for the study. Feel free to recommend other family members and friends to join.

1. Children between 10 to 15 years old,

2. Parent or grandparent of the child above.

Both child and his or her parent or grandparent must be able to read and understand English. On top of that, the child must be able to type in English on a computer. They should not be blind or deaf.

What will you (the participants) be expected to do during the study

For the user study, the participants will be introduced to the new interactive chat system we have developed. This is a new kind of entertainment system that models Confucius and his knowledge, and enables users to text chat with him through instant messaging application similar to MSN or Facebook Chat. Our system has been demonstrated in few international venues, for instance in USA and Japan.

For the user study, the children and their parents/grandparents will be given a learning task to complete using printed material and the chat system. Users are expected to complete a survey and discussion after using the system. During the discussion, they will be asked to feedback their experience verbally and facilitators will help to fill up the questionnaires. Each study is expected to last for an hour.

Compensation and Contact

Each participating user will be compensated with SGD 15 NTUC/Starbucks/McDonalds voucher(s).

Study 1: New Family Entertainment System User Study

Introduction

In Mixed Reality Lab (www.mixedrealitylab.org), Interactive Digital Media Institute, National University of Singapore, we are researching on new type of social and physical entertainment media that would mediate intergenerational communication, in particular between elderly and young. Our goal is to design digital media that would enhance family bonding and improve elderly health and well-being.

Participants Profile

We need two groups of participants. If you belong to any groups, you are eligible to sign up for the study. Feel free to recommend other family members and friends to join.

1. Children between 9 to 15 years old

2. Seniors 60 years old and above

Both children and seniors must be mobile as well as mentally and physically fit. They should not be blind or deaf.

What will you (the participants) be expected to do during the study

For the user study, the participants will be introduced to the new entertainment floor system we have developed. This is a new kind of entertainment system that could transform a living room into a playground. Our system has been demonstrated in few international venues, for instance in USA and Japan.

The participants will wear a comfortable custom made slipper, which will sense their movement on the floor. The game will involve the players to move on the floor while collecting game items, competing with another opponent.

Each study session will be two hours and involved 2 pairs of children and seniors, rotating between play and discussion. During the discussion, they will be asked to feedback their experience verbally and facilitators will help to fill up the questionnaires. There will be adequate rest in between the game play. It will be a fun and relaxing session for both seniors and children.
